HOWE’S THE HIKE?

THE STORY BEHIND THE JOURNEY

It started with a simple question from my daughters: “Dad, take us into the woods you used to explore as a kid.”

We began close to home, finding our feet on local trails before the ambition of our trips truly took hold. By 2016, those early walks had evolved into our first real backcountry expeditions. As Evelyn and Olivia grew, so did the distance. Our packs grew heavier, our routes pushed deeper into the wild, and a shared obsession with the remote corners of the map took over our lives.

From Family Hikes to Feature-Length Documentaries Over the last decade, Howe’s The Hike? has evolved from a hobby into a mission. I don’t believe in the “highlight reel” version of the outdoors. My films are long-form and immersive because I want you to feel the true rhythm of an expedition—the grueling climbs, the gear that gets us through, and the honest, unscripted reality of life on the trail.

A Lifetime in the Woods. A Future for the Wild. I’ve spent my life in these mountains, and that experience has led to some incredible honors, including being named a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. But my real work happens on the ground. As a board member of the Canadian Backcountry Trails Preservation Society, I’m dedicated to making sure these historic routes and deep-wilderness corridors are still there for the next generation of hikers to discover.

Celebrating 10 Years This summer marks a decade of Howe’s The Hike? on YouTube. To celebrate, I’m undertaking 10 commemorative, long-distance expeditions across the most rugged corridors of the Rockies. It’s a return to the roots of why I started this: to see the wild for what it is, and to share that truth with anyone willing to follow the trail.
